Hundreds, possibly thousands of jelly fish are in the Ala Wai canal by the Ala Wai Park Promenade (between Kalakaua and Ala Moana Blvd) right now (9:50 a.m.) I cannot tell what kind from my lanai ( 21st floor ). My husband went down and said they're not as visible from ground level because of the glare on the water.

My family will be staying on the North shore of Kauai from June 5 to June 19. Which side of the island usually gets the most "infestation" of box jellyfish during the days they usually appear....Thanks

Just want you to know that there were STILL box jellies in Waikiki as of May 23rd. My friend got stung at Queens on Thursday May 21; then another friend got stung on Friday May 22 at Canoes; I got stung Saturday the 23rd at Queens and as we were paddling in for the Benadryl, my friend got stung inside Canoes! Perhaps all these light and variable and Kona winds are not allowing the jellies to get blown back out? Just thought you would like to know for future tracking purposes.

I got stung on my left foot at Waikiki beach while surfing on May 31. It was so bad and I got to go to the emergency service for treatment. It seemed a box jellyfish. I have still red spots on my foot.

Box jellyfish are on the north shore of Oahu. My little sister got stung in less than a foot of water. We are staying in Malaekahana. Be careful and keep your eyes peeled!

i got the SHIT stung outta me on the north shore beaches of Oahu on either the 17th or the 18th of september, 2009. it wasn't seen, so it must have been a box jelly fish...it wrapped around my arms, hit my left breast and chin, and the only reason i am on here today, the 24th, is because all of the sting sites are becoming heated and itchy and "welled up" again. i am just trying not to scratch myself silly.

Sept 27th approx 3:00 in the afternoon Wamanalo Beach Park had my leg grazed by a jellyfish. This was right near the shoreline. Yes they sting and burn and it left quite the welt and headache!

October 18th Makaha Beach ~5pm . Not sure if it was a box jelly as it was a bit cloudy but man did it sting and welt up. My whole left arm was hurting and fingers even a bit tingly. Still have the headache (3hrs later)and welts are still throbbing... Only had Rice Vinegar and isopropyl alcohol (which I read mixed reviews on). Wasn't sure how long after white vinegar would be helpful. Will have some handy for any future hits for sure.

I saw a 3 foot long jelly fish off of Black Rock, at the end of Kaanapali Beach on Maui, It was pretty deep, about 20' down, and had a purple head with beige fringe, and long beige trailers. This is the first one I've seen in 20 years of snorkelling in Maui. The dive master at the Sheraton said it was a box jelly fish. They have signs up warning of jelly fish, but I've never seen them there before this. Seen on October 12, 2009

My daughter and I were stung on a local beach near PCC Oct 15th and the rash is still on my leg (it's been about a week)! My son was stung most likely by Portuguese Man of War as well on Kailua Beach Oct 18th. Oct 19th, today, we walked along Lanakai beaches and saw a lot of Portuguese Man of War washed up. Very small, a few inches total in length.

I received a sting at Kailua pier Sunday Nov. 15 just before coming out of the water. Hit my arm and i wiped it off and it whipped my thigh leaving red whip like marks about 5-6". We had also experienced microscopic jellyfish that stung but it went away quickly. Is there anyway to know if there will be jellyfish on a certain day. Moon? Tide?

Thanks,

Sharon

I got stung by some kind of jellyfish on Tuesday November 10th at the mouth of Napili Bay in Maui. Felt the sting, didn't touch it and just kept snorkeling. When I came out, I didn't see anything, but later that night, got big red welts that blistered up. The next day it itched so bad I got some Marine Sting and that helped alot.

Two surfers were stung this morning (at 7:30am) at Queens. Surfer 1 (that's me!) stung on the hand and wrist(thanks to the long sleeve rash guard) and Surfer 2 on top of foot.

Thanks for this site - it's really helpful! Even tho' it's been a couple years ago, just wanted to report that I got stung by a box jellyfish while surfing at in the morning at Diamond Head. It wrapped around my wrist, and my friend also got stung on his back. We thought DH would be safer than Waikiki, but they go there too, just not as many.

Everyone check the shore to look for jellies on the sand before you get in the water!

I was stung by some type of jelly fish on 4/23/10 snorkling at Molokini. I didn't know what hit me, but my husband saw the jellyfish. It hurt a lot, felt like an electric current running through my arm and down my side for the first half-hour. A teenager also was stung, and the Captain brought the boat near shore, where an EMT kayaked out to us and brought the girl back to shore where an ambulance and fire truck were waiting! The girl was able to walk and talk, but was shaking and had other existing allergies, so the Captain did not take any chances. I went back into the water at another site, and that felt great on the sting. Now, a week later, the mark is not as red, peeling a bit, but still can give off prickly sensations.

Got stung by a box jellyfish at in front of the royal Hawaiian Hotel. (In the water of course) I never saw it but I felt it. Hurts a lot. Dr's gave me a cortisone shot and a paste made up of meat tenderizer and papaya. I flooded my arm with vinegar and iced it and took Benedryl. Bummer.

My 6 year old daughter and I were both stung by box jellyfish early in the morning on 6/8/10 at Napili Bay in Maui. My daughter got it pretty good, on both legs. I was stung on the arm. We went to the firestation and they took us to the paramedics who put hot packs on us. The pain went away immediately.

My daughter got stung by a box jelly fish 2 Sundays ago on a beach in Kahana , not 5 or 7 days after the full moon like I had read later.. She had a nasty reaction. Now she doesn't want to go for a swim in the ocean! 2 other people on the same beach told us they had been stung too. One guy in the face. Wish there was some way to kind of know that it's pretty safe to go for a swim.

August 29, 2010 - Haleiwa Beach - we had two box jelly stings. One on a child's leg, and another on an adult's wrists. We doused both with vinegar immediately and applied cooling gel afterwards. Unfortunately, both blistered the next morning.
Does anyone know how long these jellys will remain in the area?

A swarm of small Man-of-War jellyfish washed up on Po'olenalena beach today on Maui. At least 3 people were stung. I counted at least 40 on the beach. All were small, less than 2" across, but the tentacles ranged in length from 6" to 12"

I was stung by a jellyfish on Kailua beach today. The part of the public beach that straddles the small river by Buzz's Restaurant. It was my first ever sting and I didn't see what kind it was. It was like an electric shock but left no mark initially so I dismissed it as some sort of muscle spasm. 5 minutes later the pain started and so did the swelling. 15 minutes after I put some of my urine on it and it seemed to help.
